One of the most frequently asked questions during the IVF treatment process is about the egg retrieval procedure. This procedure involves removing mature eggs from the woman’s ovaries and preparing them for fertilisation in a laboratory setting. So, is this procedure painful? Let’s clarify this question.
How is the Egg Retrieval Procedure Performed?
The egg retrieval procedure is commonly known as ‘OPU’ (Oocyte Pick-Up). During the procedure, the patient is placed under light sedation or general anaesthesia. This ensures that the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort throughout the procedure. The procedure is performed using a special needle under vaginal ultrasound guidance, and the eggs are carefully collected. This process is usually completed in a short time, typically 15-20 minutes.
What Will I Feel After the Procedure?
After the anaesthesia wears off, you may experience mild abdominal pain, bloating, or tenderness. However, these symptoms usually disappear on their own within a few hours to a couple of days.

Is the Egg Retrieval Procedure Safe?
At Kolan British IVF Centre, we use the most modern technologies and sterile procedures during the egg retrieval process. Our experienced team of specialists provides an individual approach to each patient, ensuring that the process is as safe and comfortable as possible.
Is the Egg Retrieval Procedure Painful?
In short, the egg retrieval procedure is generally not a painful process. Thanks to the anaesthesia used during the procedure, the patient feels nothing. Any mild discomfort that may occur after the procedure can be easily controlled with simple painkillers.
